Fire Station Closures
Many have noticed the occasional signs on the Banner Lava Cap fire station. The following information is from an email we recently received from Chief Fike of NCCFD regarding the intermittent fire station closures and the upcoming vote on the assessment to prevent further closures.
Currently the brownouts are on a one month rotation per station, November it was Provident Mine in Nevada City, December was Banner Mt, January it is Alta Sierra. NCCFD has been doing this since July but the signs are about a month old. If every firefighter is well, not on vacation, or not out on injury, all stations are staffed.
If the proposed tax referendum fails, we will be forced to lay off approximately 6 firefighters. If the referendum fails, the intent will be to try to keep some coverage at all the stations but the 3 previously identified will see some degree of permanent closure. I do not want to take all 6 firefighters out of one fire station and permanently close it. It takes three shifts to cover a station, A,B,C, each shift takes 2 firefighters. A scenario could be to permanently close A shift on Banner, that equates to 2 days of the week closed, B shift in Alta Sierra, that would be 2 different days, and 2 at Provident, that way we are always able to staff 5 engines. Currently we staff or co-staff 6 engines, these are very complicated staffing scenarios and they are always moving, so you can’t just say it will always be a Monday and Tuesday. All of this of course would have to be approved by the full Board, these are just suggestions. We are going to hold a special Board workshop, Sat Jan 21st, 0900 at Station 84 Coyote St. to go over some of the worst case scenarios.

As we are all well aware, we live in a forest that has not had a significant burn in many years. We must learn to live with long term fire danger as best we can while preserving our environment. To create the best chance for you and your home to survive a fire, BOTH defensible space AND fire resistant construction / retrofitting is required.
We cannot emphasize enough how crucial it is that our entire community participate in making our area more fire safe. We will either live together or burn together.
